Since 1999, Sher-e-Punjab has been part of Zürich's culinary landscape — from a small Indian import shop to a beloved neighbourhood restaurant. Here's our story.
Why "Sher-e-Punjab"?
"Sher-e-Punjab" means Lion of Punjab — a historic title of honour, traditionally linked to Maharaja Ranjit Singh, founder of the Sikh Empire, revered for his courage and strength. It's this legacy our crest carries forward: a tribute to Punjab's pride and resilience, brought to Zürich's table.
The Beginning
Amolk Singh opens Sher-e-Punjab Indian Take-Away — an Indian import/export shop offering Bollywood films, fresh mangoes and Indian takeaway food, in a strategic location with excellent public transport links and nearby parking.
First Steps as a Restaurant
A small dining area is added alongside the shop, marking the shift from a pure takeaway to a place to sit down and eat.
Brupbacherplatz Festival
Sher-e-Punjab serves North Indian cuisine at the first Brupbacherplatz festival — the beginning of a tradition the restaurant continues to this day.
A Full Restaurant
The import shop is closed, and Sher-e-Punjab becomes a full restaurant, fully dedicated to Punjabi cuisine and hospitality.
Sher-e-Punjab GmbH
Sher-e-Punjab Indian Take-Away becomes Sher-e-Punjab GmbH, formalising two decades of growth under a new company structure.
A New Look
The restaurant undergoes a complete renovation and rebrand, reopening with a fresh new look while staying true to its roots.
